According to the latest data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), only 151,000 retailers out of an estimated 5 million MSMEs have installed POS systems\u2014translating to a penetration rate of just one device per 1,596 people.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"554\" data-end=\"875\">This figure puts Pakistan far behind regional and global peers. For comparison, India has a POS penetration rate of 158 devices per 1,000 people, while Brazil leads with 1 device for every 10 individuals. The data underscores Pakistan\u2019s continued reliance on cash-based transactions, particularly in its informal economy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"1198\">To address this gap, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karandaaz.com.pk\/en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong data-start=\"898\" data-end=\"920\">Karandaaz Pakistan<\/strong><\/a> has launched the <em data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"1007\">\u201cRaast Rapid Merchant Onboarding and Facilitation Entities (RMOFE)\u201d<\/em> initiative. The program is designed to accelerate the onboarding of a diverse range of physical retail and service providers onto Raast\u2014the country\u2019s instant payment system developed by SBP.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1200\" data-end=\"1319\">The initiative will primarily target merchants and service providers operating in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1321\" data-end=\"1601\">\n<li data-start=\"1321\" data-end=\"1445\">\n<p data-start=\"1323\" data-end=\"1445\">Traditional and modern retail outlets such as kiryana stores, grocery shops, pharmacies, supermarkets, and fuel stations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1547\">\n<p data-start=\"1448\" data-end=\"1547\">In-person service providers like delivery agents, ride-hailing drivers, and food delivery workers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1548\" data-end=\"1601\">\n<p data-start=\"1550\" data-end=\"1601\">Women merchants operating from physical locations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1894\">Raast enables low-cost, interoperable <a href=\"https:\/\/pkfin.kotenterprises.dev\/2025\/02\/24\/sbp-rolls-out-raast-participation-criteria-to-expand-digital-payments-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">digital payments through features such as Raast<\/a> IDs, QR codes, and IBAN-based transfers. To encourage adoption, the <em data-start=\"1757\" data-end=\"1787\">Merchant Discount Rate (MDR)<\/em> will be maintained at zero during the project period, with associated costs covered through grant funding.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"2166\">Only merchants engaged in ethical and lawful business activities will be eligible for onboarding.
