ISLAMABAD:<\/strong> Sultan Ali Allana, a prominent banker and philanthropist, has been awarded the prestigious Nishan-e-Khidmat, one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to public service. The award was conferred during a special investiture ceremony held on Pakistan Day, following its approval by President Asif Ali Zardari on August 14, 2024, during the country’s 78th Independence Day celebrations.<\/p>\n

With a career spanning over 40 years, Allana has played a transformative role in Pakistan’s financial and social sectors. As a pioneer in microfinance banking<\/a>, he founded the First Microfinance Bank in 2002, paving the way for greater financial inclusion. His efforts to align Pakistan’s financial system with international standards<\/a> were instrumental in the country’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.<\/p>\n

Allana also spearheaded Pakistan’s first agricultural initiative under a commercial bank, providing small farmers with sustainable frameworks that have strengthened rural economies. Beyond his banking innovations, he has been a key figure in fostering trade and commerce across South Asia and securing international investments for Pakistan through collaborations with global financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), British International Investment (BII), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Chinese financial entities.<\/p>\n

His philanthropic initiatives are equally significant. Through the HBL<\/a> Foundation, which he helped establish, Allana has expanded access to education and healthcare for underserved communities. Since joining the banking sector<\/a> in 1985, his focus has remained on enhancing opportunities for national development and public welfare.<\/p>\n

Dr. Waqar Masood, former finance secretary, lauded Allana\u2019s efforts in addressing Pakistan’s financial challenges, particularly his role in facilitating the country’s exit from the FATF grey list. Former finance minister Miftah Ismail echoed these sentiments, acknowledging Allana’s contributions to both economic reforms and social projects.<\/p>\n

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi praised Allana’s leadership during national crises, including his support during natural disasters, economic challenges, and sports sponsorship. Renowned economist Dr. Ashfaq Hussain described the Nishan-e-Khidmat as a well-deserved acknowledgment of Allana’s contributions to banking, social development, education, and healthcare.<\/p>\n

Zafar Masud, Chairman of the Pakistan Banking Association (PBA), highlighted Allana\u2019s success in attracting international investments and modernizing the banking system, which he credited with stabilizing Pakistan’s economy.
